Who is Radio Freedom?

Radio Freedom was the Voice of the African National Congress (ANC) and Umkhonto we Sizwe during the liberation struggle.

It was used by the ANC as an instrument of social mobilization under conditions of illegality, armed struggle, and underground work. It served as a clarion call to make South Africa ungovernable and apartheid unworkable. Radio Freedom was heavily involved in the battle of ideas to inspire hope, courage, and convince people of the victory of liberation.

Now, it is being recalled to once again defend the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) against what it perceives as a massive onslaught by the forces of counter-revolution. Its current mission is to expose lies and distortions about the NDR and the Developmental State, and to highlight the lived experience of South Africans and the legacy of apartheid.

Mission: Aims to expose lies and distortions about the aims and objectives of the NDR and the Developmental State, and to tell the “lived experience” of the South African situation, including the legacy of apartheid.

Key Objectives:

  • Expose and Counter Counter-Revolutionary Narratives: To identify and debunk activities and ideologies that aim to undermine the authority of the South African state, often disguised as democratic functions.
  • Educate on the “Battle of Ideas”: To explain the concept of ideological struggle in politics and how it is being waged in South Africa to influence public opinion and advance specific interests.
  • Highlight the Historical Context: To emphasize the enduring impact of colonialism and apartheid on present-day South Africa, referencing the insights of Professor Sampie Terreblanche.
  • Debunk Misinformation: To actively counter false narratives and propaganda, exemplified by the analysis of President Trump’s executive order and the claims made by groups like AfriForum and Solidarity.
  • Present Factual Evidence of Inequality: To provide statistical data on income inequality, executive representation, and unemployment rates across racial groups in South Africa, demonstrating the ongoing legacy of apartheid.
  • Reiterate the ANC’s Vision: To remind the audience of the ANC’s foundational objectives for a united, equal, and prosperous South Africa, as outlined in “Ready to Govern” (1992).
  • Analyze the Current Political Landscape: To offer insights into the challenges facing South Africa’s democracy, including inequality, poverty, unemployment, and the implications of the 2024 election results and the formation of the GNU.
  • Promote a Unified National Vision: To advocate for the development of a truly South African vision, free from past prejudices, and based on the collective wisdom and talents of all citizens.
